Hall of Fame Inductee 2016 by Mark Buchanan

Buffalo, New York
August 19, 2016

 Good evening,

It is my great pleasure to induct Wayne Staggs into the Scottish Masters Hall of Fame. Wayne is a three-time Master’s World Champion, and holds a special distinction of having won it twice in Scotland in 2009 and 2014, as well as in St. Louis last year. He has battled over the years with the likes of other great champions like Ian Percy, Bob Jeffrey and Larry Sisseck. Wayne is always very competitive. But that’s not all.

Wayne is one of the true gentlemen of our sport. For years he has been the crucial person in making the games in the Rocky Mountain region a success. In 2010, he was instrumental in making the 10th master’s championships a huge success. For years he has conducted a Sunday practice session and has coached many dozens if not hundreds of new throwers in the games. He long served as President of the Rocky Mountain Scottish Athletes.

And it has become a family affair. Seemingly everyone in the Staggs family joins in. Wayne himself is often both the Athletic Director and a Judge on days he is not throwing. This means he drives the equipment trailer to the games, sets up the field, sets the order of events for all classes, judges all the next day, and on the third day, instead of a rest, throws in the masters division, then tears it all down and goes home. His daughter and son-in-law, Lindsey and Tyler score at all the games, and bring their young boys in kilts with their kid’s versions of the weights and caber! Bryan, Wayne’s son, now throws in the A division and has become the right-hand man to his father. I could go on and on, but it’s time for a drink.

Ladies and Gentleman, a true Master and Gentleman of the Games, Wayne Staggs.
