Masters’ World Championships -  Some General Rules

To be eligible for entry, an athlete must have competed in at least five sanctioned (see schedule page) highland games within the twelve month period preceding the World Championship competition.  A waiver may be granted to Scottish athletes who normally compete on a regular basis but cannot meet this requirement this year.  The waiver must be requested from SMAI well in advance.   Athletes who have placed in the top six at a prior MWC automatically qualify for entry.
All entries will be paid from this website via PayPal and entries are not complete until the fee is paid.
Notification of entry receipt will be a listing of athlete's name on Who's Coming page of this web site.
All contestants must wear kilt and kilt stockings (with flashings) and games t-shirt at all times on the field.  No kilts will be provided.
Athlete check-in and weigh-in will take place at the field the day prior to and at the field between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. on the day of the competition.
Rules of competition will be those determined by the host games.
If there is a dispute, the decision of the judges and athletic director will be final.
No children under the age of 12 on the field at any time.  Family members are only allowed into the athletic area (but not on the field) after they have signed a waiver and must be wearing Scottish attire (kilt, etc.)
Safety is everyone’s responsibility but the judge’s decision will be final in determining what constitutes safe technique in a throw.
Implements used in competition will be those furnished by the games committee.
Sheaf forks will be those furnished by competitors.  Any competitor may use any fork brought to the field regardless of who brought it.

Ties and Placement in Competition

The following rules for ties were determined by the SMAI board at a meeting held on the field at the 2005 MWC in New Hampshire.

INDIVIDUAL EVENTS:  Ties in distance events as determined by each athletes best throw will stand as ties.  Ties in height events will be broken according to misses as determined by the rules of competition used for the games or, if not broken by misses, will stand as ties.  Ties in the caber will be broken by next best tosses and, if still not broken, will stand as ties.  In case of unbroken ties, each tied athlete will be given the same place medal and the place points will be divided equally among the tied athletes.

OVERALL PLACES:  Ties for world champion or second and third place overall (athletes who accumulated the same number of event points) will not be broken but left as ties and the title shared by the tied athletes.  In case of ties, duplicate trophies will be provided.

TO RECEIVE OVERALL PLACEMENT:  In order for a competitor to win or place in the overall competition, they must attempt to compete in all of the events. At the discretion of the athletic director, if the competitor does not attempt to compete in all the events then they will not receive points or awards for the missed individual events nor will they be eligible for the overall competition.
